The Julianstown Village Design Statement was formally launched by Irish Minister of State, Ciarán Cuffe on Thursday 7 October 2010. For the past year we have been privileged to work in a supporting capacity to the local community on this National 'Pilot' Project for the Heritage Council's Village Design Statement (VDS) Programme II. The lively evening event included a joint presentation by James Hennessey and eight members of the local village design subgroup. Not only did they present the collaborative process and contents of the VDS, but also reported on the progress already made in delivering the projects it proposes. In launching the statement, the Minister stated that "The Julianstown Village Design Statement has provided a successful example of how local people of all ages can participate and become involved in local village planning and design matters…" The findings of the project evaluation will now be used to inform expansion of the VDS programme across Ireland.

The Paul Hogarth Company was appointed as part of a multi-disciplinary team led by Donald Insall Associates, to develop proposals for the restoration of the historic Johnstown Castle and its grounds and to promote its enhanced role as a visitor destination.
The Landscape Masterplan highlights how the existing designed landscape of lakes, cascades, woodland and walled gardens can be complemented.
A new terrace associated with the proposed visitor centre overlooking the lakes; a grand approach to the Castle; segway trails and an adventure play / tree-top experience and opening up the existing overgrown landscape around the lower lake and its island, all contribute to the unique, proposed visitor experience at Johnstown Castle.

Our Public Realm Plan for the town of Birr in County Offaly won high praise from the Irish Landscape Institute Awards judges.
“A very thorough study that places the town in an overriding landscape context with important strategic links along the river park area. This sits well with a sound understanding and sensitive approach to the fine and important architectural character of the town. The significant programme of consultation, which formed a core part of the process, is to be commended. If followed accordingly, the town will benefit from a high quality, restrained design using appropriate materials that will reflect the importance of this historic town.”

Ideas for Action
Our entry to the International competition “Ideas for Action” for the Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung received an award for Excellence in the final round.
Organised by the International Urban Development Association (INTA), the competition sought innovative ideas by which Taiwan’s second city could further its goal to be a centre of environmental sustainability. The competition attracted 111 entries from 14 countries around the world.
Our entry - entitled 'Symbiosis: 6 Ideas for Action' – proposed a suite of radical citywide initiatives that would transform this post industrial city and reconnect its residents with the city’s natural ecosystem. Proposals included flooding key city streets to turn them into canals, mass planting indigenous bamboo throughout the city as a source of biomass energy and the rolling out of a major programme of green roofed industrial units.

Marsh Fountain Society award for Custom House Square water feature
Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA, today welcomed a prestigious UK award for the water feature at Custom House Square, Belfast. The water feature received a special commendation at the Marsh Fountain Society’s 2009 awards ceremony held in London. The state of the art feature traces the course of the River Farset as it runs from the Albert Clock along the edge of the Square, using a series of choreographed and illuminated water jets.

The Square, open space and in particular the water feature provide an attractive public place in the city centre for citizens and visitors and an outdoor events venue of world class reputation.

Connswater Community Greenway wins BURA Waterways Renaissance Awards
At the awards ceremony in Liverpool on 31st March, the Connswater Community Greenway was awarded first place in the partnership category, and runner-up in the strategy and masterplanning category of the 2009 waterways renaissance awards, a UK wide event run by The Waterways Trust and BURA (British Urban Regeneration Association).
Roger Hanbury, Chief Executive of The Waterways Trust, said: “Connswater Community Greenway is an excellent example of how the modern renaissance of our waterways continues to transform our environment, creating education, leisure and business opportunities, injecting new life into formerly neglected areas and bringing communities together. This project clearly demonstrates what can be achieved with vision, commitment and partnership working.”
