Lighting Strategies and Projects

colour change lighting
lighting the new lanark world heritage site
Before the establishment of The Paul Hogarth Company in 1990, Paul co-wrote the Edinburgh Lighting Vision in association with specialist lighting designers. This was one of the earliest, if not the first, lighting strategy to be prepared in the UK.

Since then Paul has developed a particular interest in the lighting of public spaces, buildings and landscape and has emphasised the importance of designing for a 24-hour environment in all public realm and landscape projects undertaken by the practice.

We have undertaken a number of lighting strategies, prepared lighting masterplans as part of public realm projects and implemented a number of civic lighting projects, including New Lanark, a World Heritage Site, and Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh. Many of our public realm projects have involved the custom design and manufacture of new street-lighting columns and lanterns and all have been designed to ensure a high quality night-time experience. We have also collaborated with a number of specialist lighting design consultants on a range of public realm strategy plans and projects, and have worked closely with artists to introduce public artworks into the public realm, most of which have involved detailed lighting design.
