Bank Street Basin Public Realm
Previously a section of the Monkland Canal, this disused corridor space has been regenerated to provide a versatile public space for Coatbridge.
A combination of linear parkland and urban space, the design offers improved opportunities for both passive and active recreation, including an events venue in a unique environment. Conserving the site’s infrastructure and artefacts was paramount.
Central to the design is the retention of the footprint of the existing sunken basin. This provides the setting for a series of corten-steel artworks that interpret its former use and rich industrial heritage. The choice of detailing, lighting, planting and furniture also complements the character of the site.
